About the product

[Traditional crafts for the modern lifestyle]
The modern lacquerware TO:DAY was born out of pursuing a traditional craft form that is easy to incorporate into modern life.
In recent years, there has been an increase in lacquerware with modern colours and designs, but modern art design is a rare experiment that stands out even among modern lacquerware.
TO:DAY is inspired by the chemistry between contemporary art and traditional crafts. This unique yet chic product could provide a difference to your daily space.
The product line-up includes a tea tray and cutlery stand set in each of three exclusive designs, that can be used in a variety of ways to brighten your life.

[Aizu lacquerware, one of Japan's historic lacquerware since 15th century]
Aizu lacquerware, which developed in the Aizu region of western Fukushima Prefecture, is a traditional craft that has a history dating back to the 15th century and is the pride of Japan.
Aizu lacquerware is renowned for the beauty of its gold lacquerware (maki-e). There are several maki-e techniques, but this product was individually decorated by artisans using silk (screen) printing, which is a common technique for adding designs using a screen plate.
The gold Maki-e used for the modern lacquerware TO:DAY has a slightly yellowish and rich deep colour, giving it a delicate and complex shimmer when the light shines on it.

Regarding the production of TO:DAY, we worked together with Suzuzen Lacquerware, a long-established Aizu lacquerware company founded in 1832, and is a representative of the historic Aizu lacquerware industry. The maki-e production and painting were done by skilled artists who have been in the business for over 50 years.

[The Zen spirituality and quality of Japanese art for your home time]
The glamour of contemporary art and the calmness of Japanese modernism accentuate a simple room and create a space that brings the inspiration of Zen. When you want to relax after a long day, or when you want to treat your guests differently from usual. Adds a sense of Zen and quality to your home time.

[Three exclusive designs; chemistry between contemporary art and traditional crafts]
Modern lacquerware TO:DAY is available in three different designs (patterns). Please choose the design that resonates with your own artistic spirit.

1: Walking street
The design features people walking down the street, connected by a single stroke of the brush. The creative director of TO:DAY, Kyoko Watanabe, is also a kimono obi artist and was originally inspired by the patterns sewn onto obi belts. This is another fusion of contemporary art and traditional culture. It is a sophisticated design that creates an artistic space just by decorating it.

2: π (pi) numbers
Fine numerals are expressed simply and sharply as lines. This number 3.14... is yes, pi. The simplicity of the design complements what you place it on and makes it easy to use on a table or around a desk.

3: Leopard
The leopard pattern as a contemporary art form is crossed with lacquerware. Combined with the high quality of the lacquerware, it is a luxurious and fashionable product. It is sure to add a special touch to your home or office drinking time.

Specification
The product line-up includes a tea tray and cutlery set in each of the three patterns.
It is compact and lightweight and has been designed in places to enhance ease of use.

[Tea Tray]
The Tea Tray is a tray and art panel with a gold maki-e design in the centre and a raised frame around it. The horizontal, small, light and thin tray is just the right size to be used as a tray for one person to hold sweets, cakes or snacks together with drinks*. It fits in with both Japanese and Western atmospheres and can be used in Japanese settings such as table tea ceremonies. As well as being used as a tray for placing and storing objects, it can also be decorated as interior art, using wall pins and display items.
*This product can be used as a tray or pastry dish without any problems but as tableware, please use a paper napkin or plate for placing items directly into the mouth in order to preserve maki-e on the surface.

-Tray dimensions: 24 cm (width) x 11 cm (depth) x 1 cm (height) (inner step is approx. 3 mm).
-Weight of tray: 138 g.
-Tray design: black, gold maki-e in the centre (choice of three designs).

[Cutlery stand]
The cutlery stand is a square cylindrical stand with a gold maki-e design. Maki-e is applied to one of the four sides, while the other three are plain black. In addition to holding cutlery, it can also be used as a pen stand to store stationery and small items or as interior art for arranging flowers.
*When used as a vase, please place a test tube or similar inside. Do not fill directly with water.

-Stand dimensions: 4.5 cm (inner diameter 3.6~3 cm) (width) x 4.5 cm (inner diameter 3.6~3 cm) (depth) x 13 cm (height)
-Stand weight: 95 g.
-Stand design: gold maki-e on black at 1 side, plain black on 3 sides. (3 designs to choose from).

-Lacquer/materials: cashew lacquer, mokugo (synthetic processed products of wood flour and resin)
-Colour shade: black (glossy) (matte finish on reverse side)
-Made in Japan (Aizu Wakamatsu City, Fukushima Prefecture)
*As lacquer craftsmen in Aizu produce this product piece by piece, there may be individual differences. Please note that nuances may differ from those shown in the photographs.
Notes
Due to the nature of this crafted product made of woody material, please do not use a dishwasher. Wash gently with a neutral detergent and wipe dry before storing. Because it is a lacquered product, most stains can be removed by simply washing the surface with hot water.

The IZ JAPAN business was started as a new business unit of CAP Co Ltd, based in Koriyama, Fukushima Prefecture, to help introduce good Japanese products such as Aizu lacquerware both domestically and internationally.

The IZ JAPAN project originally started out of a sense of crisis regarding traditional Japanese industry as seen from the outside and a desire to support the industry in Fukushima.
The person in charge of the project realised the beauty of traditional Japanese crafts and the difficulty of incorporating them into modern lifestyles while working abroad, and became more determined to find something she could do to promote this culture.

The Aizu region in western Fukushima Prefecture once flourished as a major manufacturing centre for lacquerware, and Aizu lacquerware was even exported abroad by the end of the Edo period (19th century). The history of the lacquer craft of the Aizu region, Aizu-nuri, is longer than that of any other lacquerware production area in Japan, dating back to the 15th century. However, while people have barely heard of Wajima-nuri when it comes to lacquerware, Aizu-nuri is not as well-known as it used to be. IZ JAPAN wishes to promote a new way of incorporating lacquerware into the modern lifestyle and to bring more attention to traditional Japanese crafts worldwide.

Modern art and traditional lacquerware collaboration is wonderful! I hesitated with the leopard until the end, but it seemed to fit the room better, so I chose the street style. I am looking forward to receiving the product. Please do your best.
