Figure Series "ARTIST SUPPORT ITEM (A.S.I)"
From Tokyo hobby manufacturer, Kotobukiya, comes the series "ARTIST SUPPORT ITEM (A.S.I)." This new creative support item series aims to assist everyone who aspires to be a creator in a way only Kotobukiya can provide.
The A.S.I Hand Model was developed under the close supervision of Takahiro Kagami, an acclaimed artist in the world of animation and illustration. He is especially well known for his depiction of hands and is the author of multiple reference books dedicated to this subject. This notable hand model is brought to life by sculptor Tsukuru Shirahige, a 20-year veteran at Kotobukiya.
Tangible and Adjustable Reference Material
Kotobukiya's expertise in molding and joint making were exhaustively applied to attain ideal proportions and flexibility, resulting in a "hand of the golden ratio". This allows users to observe the hand from angles that are difficult with their own.The beautifully balanced 2D drawings of Takahiro Kagami, referred to as "divine drawings," were analyzed from all angles to create this incredibly realistic 3D hand model.
The model is created with the proportions of the hands drawn by Takahiro Kagami that adorn various famous anime titles such as Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters, and maintain their breathtakingly powerful yet delicate look. From the shape of the nails, the length and lines of the fingers, down to the shadows that form, this model recreates the beautiful details of a hand as realistically as is possible.
The Key 20 Joints to Depicting the Complex Hand
Not only was the beauty of the proportioning taken into account in the design but the functionality and potential of using the hand model as reference material for sculpting and drawing were also fully incorporated. As a result, the joint system was sculpted to enable nearly as many posing options as the human hand, from powerful performances to theatrical expressions and delicate movements.
In the pursuit of realism in movement, multiple aspects are included in the hand model such as a faithful recreation of the articulation of finger joints that is yet more delicate and supple in flexibility than a normal human hand and realistic muscle thickness that is usually difficult to convey in resin.A dynamic level of spread and fold in the fingers are also included to further the range of motion. To prevent the fingers from being adjusted into angles that are not natural, a locking mechanism is set in place within the model, allowing for "real poses" to be made.
The supple yet complex range of motion of the frame and joints is recreated through a newly developed design by sculptor Tsukuru Shirahige and Kotobukiya's plastic model kit team. The result is graceful and smooth gestures that make it difficult to believe the model is made of resin. Make use of this model's exceptional level of functionality borne from the experience and sculpting know-how of Kotobukiya in your artistic pursuits.
Create Various Poses in Life-Size
An important feature of the A.S.I Hand Model is that it is made in a size close to that of a real hand. Its life-size scale enables a high level of freedom in poses for observation such as holding objects and holding another person's hand. Its elegant movements make it possible to pick up objects, hold fine items, or grasp structurally complex articles in ways that were never thought possible for a hand model.
Even poses that require delicate finger adjustments such as holding pens or small and round objects, or complex finger movements such as closing a camera shutter, can be accomplished. Moreover, the level of rigidity in the joints allows poses to be maintained even when placed against walls, floors, or curved surfaces.

Integrates Guide Details for Drawing and Sculpting
When a human hand moves, muscles and skin contract and expand. Allowing a 360-Degree Observation of Proportions, Movement, Shadows, and Body Structure
The main point of developing the A.S.I Hand Model is to enable the observation of proportions and posing from 360 degrees. The model is easy to use whether you are a professional or an amateur and enables you to see angles and shades invisible when using your own hand or a photograph for reference.
The A.S.I Hand Model comes in two colors; gray and white. Gray is useful for observing real tones close to that of skin while white is good for observing shadows cast on the hand.

I usually use my own hands or photographs for reference when drawing. However, it is good to be able to fix the hand in one position and view it from various angles. After trying it out, I felt that there was quite a high level of freedom in the model and was very similar to a real hand. I also felt that the wide range of motion in addition to the level of precise movement extending to the palm of the hand was a very rare feature in this model.
I think it is a well-balanced model. I think experienced artists will be able to add the extra features such as the webs of the hands from memory or observing their own hand, while for an inexperienced artist who is still learning, the guide parts will come in handy. Out of the two colors, the gray one is similar to a real hand's skin tone with realistic shades. The white one has the advantage that shadows are easy to see and shapes are clearly shown.
A Project Borne of Two Professionals Joining Forces
The A.S.I Hand Model project was born from an encounter between Takahiro Kagami, one who is passionate about the sculpting of hands, and Kotobukiya. "As a figure manufacturer, we want to make the perfect 3D hand model employing Takahiro's expert knowledge on the sculpts of hands, to the point of authoring books on the subject." From that desire, this project arose with Tsukuru Shirahige chosen as the sculptor because, just like Takahiro, he has the same level of preciseness when working with hands. Over a span of two years of collaborating, from initial planning to sculpting, producing more than 10 prototypes and undergoing repeated refinements, the A.S.I Hand Model is finally born.
