My name is Nishidate, the initiator and representative of this project. I used to be a craftsman (hairdresser) who handled cutlery such as scissors, and I have a deep interest in and respect for traditional Japanese techniques such as swordsmithing. The "HITOFURI" project aims to create products with a new appeal while utilizing tradition. The products planned and produced in cooperation with craftspeople with traditional skills will be available on the "HITOFURI" website, which was launched as a crowdfunding opportunity. We will devote our lives to this project so that it will move in the right direction, and we look forward to your cooperation and support.

About the Product

HITOFURI's Tamahagane paper knives are created to preserve for future generations the swordsmithing techniques that have been passed down for hundreds of years in Japan. The materials used, the manufacturing process, and the finished product all reflect the authentic Japanese sword tradition and the skills of the swordsmith.

The manufacturing process of HITOFURI paper knives is the same as that of Japanese swords themselves up to the halfway point. Sword artisans called "Tousho" forge the steel one by one by hand and finish it into paper knives.

The surface pattern created in the process is the expression of the blade. The paper knife features a pattern called "masame-hada," which looks like the grain of wood when it is cut lengthwise.

The dedicated stand can be used to solemnly display the paper knives. If you purchase it together with our existing jet-black Japanese sword-shaped paper knife, you can display two of them together. For those who wish to store them carefully, we also recommend a scroll-shaped storage bag.

A set of goods featuring HITOMARU, HITOFURI's mascot character, is also available. HITOMARU is a samurai in the making and training every day. Please take a look if you would like to support the transmission of swordsmithing techniques.

About the Maker

The HITOFURI project has the concept of developing original products in partnership with bearers of traditional culture and bringing them to a wider audience.

Nishidate, the project initiator and representative, was working as a hairdresser. Having worked with scissors, he has developed a deep respect for and interest in the traditional skills of Japanese cutlery artisans. On the other hand, traditional techniques related to swords have been handed down for hundreds of years, but the next hundred years are not certain. We started this HITOFURI project because we believe that by reintroducing the appeal of traditional techniques to the world, it will lead to the possibility of creating the next bearers of these skills.

The swordsmith (Tousho) who shares this belief, and who participated in the project in order to make Japanese sword culture more familiar to the public, is Mr. Hiroyasu Ando. His techniques have been highly acclaimed, winning awards of excellence in 2017, 2019, 2020, and 2021 at the Exhibition of Contemporary Sword Craftsmanship organized by the Association for Preservation of Japanese Art Swords (The Nihon Bijutsu Token Hozon Kyokai).

We would be honored if you would take our paper knives, which incorporate the manufacturing process of authentic Japanese swords, in your hands.

Risk & Challenges

Regarding the part that I would like to focus on in this HITOFURI project, "to firmly pass on Japanese traditional culture and technology to future generations." As with any field of craftsmanship, the traditional techniques of swords have been passed down for hundreds of years, but the next hundred years are not certain. Also, many of today's people may be spending days without the opportunity to come into contact with the technology. We hope that by literally "touching" the charm of Japanese tradition, its value will be re-recognized and the baton touch to the next generation will be more reliable. * The schedule described in the text is the schedule at the time of project release. Due to the nature of support purchases, there is a risk of delivery delays. As a general rule, support purchases cannot be canceled due to delivery delays, but if it exceeds 6 months from the scheduled return delivery month, only those who wish to do so will be canceled.
